Description
So happy that "Bright Roses" tied for second place in the 8/11/2022 "Digital Paintings 2" contest held by the Digital Paintbrush group. Many thanks to the contest administrator, Taphath Foose, and everyone who voted for my image. Congratulations to the other winners!
A vivid image of three brilliant orange and yellow roses arranged in a golden bowl against a deep red and black background.
I used to grow tea roses, lots of years ago. They were gorgeous. I had 25 different varieties. They took up a lot of time, but when the rosy red shoots would spring up almost over night, and I knew fresh buds and blossoms were on their way, it almost made all the hard work worthwhile.
I say almost because I did eventually give up. I was out maneuvered ... by the black spot (the rose garden was planted facing west, not east, and they caught the shade from the house in the mornings), the hungry deer (they loved those tender red shoots!) but mostly ... cane borers. Don't get me started on cane borers. All the tricks that I read about ... I tried. It was no use.
But on those rare times when the moon and stars aligned and I'd get a few buds to successfully go to full bloom, it was glorious.
Hand sketched and painted from my imagination in Corel Painter 2019 with the Wacom Intuos 4 tablet, the art pen and The Romantic Roses digital brushes.

Lois, this entry series is reminiscent of beautiful vintage hand painted black enamel trays. My mom had fruit, floral and avian ones on black which were accented with a matte gold edging...memories. Beautiful entries All, ...best to you..L
Lois Bryan replied:
Wow, Laurel! You reminded me of something I'd forgotten about ... my mom had one of those too. I have a very vague memory of it ... but I've had a real love of color against black background all my life ... I wonder if that's where it originated? Great comment ... and thanks for that long-dormant memory!!!! Glad you enjoyed this one.
