Description
Rainbow Trout are native to the fresh water rivers, streams, and lakes of the Rocky Mountains. Their popularity as a game fish have led to their introduction into streams and lakes all over North America. Rainbow trout get their name from their beautiful coloration. As members of the salmon family, trout also grow relatively large. The largest rainbow trout on record weighed 48 pounds. Rainbow trout are predators, and will eat almost anything that they can catch, including insects, small fish, and crustaceans. Their predators include other fish, kingfishers, herons, eagles, raccoons, and of course, humans. A distinct characteristic of the rainbow trout is an innate desire to return to spawn in the same stream where they were hatched. During spawning season in the spring, rainbows will find a secluded cove or inlet, where they will dig a nest in the gravel and lay their eggs. After a male fertilizes the eggs, the female will bury them for protection during incubation and then leave. “The Rainbow Trout,” is a digital painting and composite created by Spadecaller.
